Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, the Dormaahene, is pleading with President Akufo-Addo to step in and convince the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to abandon plans to build a new head office that will reportedly cost $250 million.

Plans to build a new headquarters are inappropriate given Ghana’s current economic predicament, says Dormaahene, who also serves as a High Court judge.

“We were shocked to learn that the Bank of Ghana is utilizing up to a quarter of the amount of the loan we are receiving from the IMF to construct a home. This is what? So, my chiefs, are I to understand that they are simply doing as they please?

Are they acting in this way as a result of their independence? He posed the question while holding a state speech with his subchiefs, “How can the Bank of Ghana unilaterally take on such a project?

“We urge the president to get in touch with the Bank of Ghana and discuss this matter with them. Because the bank is not completely independent, we anticipate positive results from it, he lamented.

The Central Bank is being pressed for greater information by the Minority caucus in Parliament on the costs and procedures associated with buying land for its new headquarters building.

The minority caucus’ chief whip, Kwame Governs Agbodza, and MP for the Bawku Central Constituency, Mahama Ayariga, gave the BoG a seven-day deadline to provide them with comprehensive information about its new headquarters.

“I am writing to request the following information on behalf of Ing. Kwame Governs Agbodza, the representative of the Adaklu Constituency and Chief Whip of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in the Parliament of Ghana:

“The financing arrangement for the currently under construction new Bank of Ghana headquarters building at Ridge in Accra.”

“How was the land on which the new headquarters building of the Bank of Ghana, which is currently under construction at Ridge in Accra, was procured, and at what price or under what arrangement and from who,” he continued.
