President John Dramani Mahama has described the proposed Bolgatanga Airport project as a major development that could transform the Upper East Region by improving air connectivity, attracting investment and boosting economic activity.
President Mahama made the remarks during an inspection of the proposed airport site as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper East Region.
According to the President, the new airport will significantly reduce the burden on residents who currently have to travel approximately 160 kilometres to Tamale to access flights to Accra and other destinations.
The proposed Bolgatanga Airport is expected to begin operations with an initial capacity of about 100,000 passengers, with infrastructure designed to accommodate future expansion as passenger demand increases.
President Mahama noted that the airport will also create new opportunities for businesses operating in the region, particularly the mining sector, while making travel easier for investors and entrepreneurs moving between Accra and the Upper East Region.
He said improved air transportation would strengthen connectivity, facilitate business expansion and contribute to the overall economic development of the region.
President Mahama expressed optimism that the sod-cutting ceremony for the Bolgatanga Airport construction would be held before the end of 2026.
He further indicated that contractors are expected to complete the project in less than the 24-month contractual period, subject to the timely execution of the construction works.
The proposed airport is therefore expected to become an important part of Ghana’s transport infrastructure, providing residents and businesses in the Upper East Region with improved access to domestic air travel.
