Charles Opoku has been chosen as the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate in the Assin North by-election.
Charles Opoku received 397 votes, defeating his lone opponent, Freeman Amoah Kyei, who received 136 votes and had three ballots invalidated.
In order to win the Assin North seat, Charles Opoku will compete on June 27 against James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress.
The party held its internal election after Parliament ruled the Assin North seat vacant as a result of a Supreme Court decision over James Gyakye Quayson’s ability to hold the seat.

The panel, presided over by Justices Jones Dotse, unanimously ruled that James Gyakye Quayson’s election and subsequent swearing-in as a member of parliament were illegal, invalid, and of no force or effect.
Quayson was judged to be ineligible to run for Member of Parliament in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections by the top court.
