President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the necessity of enhancing public involvement, strengthening democratic government, and creating a development model based on Ghana’s own institutions and capabilities.
Speaking at the 4th Annual Convening of the Ghana Civil Society Forum, the President discussed Ghana’s democratic journey since the Fourth Republic’s founding, emphasising the nation’s peaceful handovers of power, robust democratic institutions, dynamic media environment, and rising levels of citizen participation as accomplishments that need to be preserved.
The real test of democracy, according to President Mahama, is whether or not people feel heard, institutions continue to be held accountable, public policies address the needs of common people, and development reaches every locality in the nation.
The President also urged a revitalised approach to Africa’s development goal, emphasising the significance of giving domestic capacity, innovation, enterprise, and national ownership first priority when funding and advancing development.

He underlined the necessity of creating a more robust and self-sustaining development model while reiterating Ghana’s gratitude for the assistance of development partners.
He said that his administration’s reforms and initiatives, such as those focused on responsible economic management, improved tax mobilisation, economic diversification, export promotion, and strategic investor attraction, are still guided by this vision.
President Mahama also praised civil society organisations for their longstanding contributions to Ghana’s democratic growth, characterising them as important defenders of inclusive development, accountability, transparency, and human rights.
He emphasised the significance of ongoing cooperation in promoting national development and pointed out that many of Ghana’s democratic advancements had been made possible by the positive involvement of civic actors.
