The Electoral Commission (EC) has been instructed by the Accra High Court to move forward with compiling and announcing the results of the parliamentary elections for the Ablekuma North and Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituencies.

To ensure a seamless process, the Court, presided over by Justice Rev. Joseph Adu-Owusu Agyeman, also directed the Inspector General of Police to guarantee sufficient security for the EC at all collation centers.

At a press conference on Thursday, December 19, EC Chair Jean Mensa stated that the commission will not uphold the parliamentary results declaration in nine constituencies due to the fact that they were made under duress.

These include Dome-Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Techiman South, Obuasi East, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, and Ahafo Ano South and North.

She declared, “We will not uphold results made under threats or duress. The declarations made by our staff were made under threats and we consider them illegal.”

She also urged both the departing President Akufo-Addo and the incoming President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the safety of commission officials so they can finish their work in time for the next elections in 2024.

Jean Mensa continued, “We call on Akufo-Addo, John Mahama to intervene in this matter and provide the commission with adequate security.”

The EC had already declared on December 13 that the Tesano Police Depot would no longer be recollecting results.

The EC justified the halt by pointing to procedural flaws and security concerns.
