Only a few days after momentarily losing the title to South African businessman Johann Rupert, Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote has made an intriguing comeback to become Africa’s richest man.

Dangote’s net worth surpassed Rupert’s current net worth of $13.3 billion as of August 5th, 2024, based on Bloomberg’s billionaire real-time index. He is ranked six places higher on Bloomberg’s list than the millionaire from South Africa.

With a net worth of $13.6 billion on August 2, 2024, Rupert surpassed Dangote to become the wealthiest person in Africa.

Rupert’s recent jump, which brought his year-to-date gains to an astounding $1.21 billion, was attributable to a $134 million increase in his previous appraisal. The two titans were neck and neck.

In comparison, even though Dangote’s most recent value adjustment showed a modest increase of $27 million, his year-to-date valuation had suffered a substantial loss of $1.53 billion.

Rupert’s year-to-date (YTD) change is +$875M, while his most recent value change was -$334M. Based on Bloomberg’s index, he is currently ranked 155th richest person in the world. Dangote is ranked 149th on the index with a latest valuation change of +$144M and a year-to-date change of -$1.38B.

Given that earlier in the year, Rupert had the title of richest person in Africa for a brief period of time—dangesteet’s net worth was $9.5 billion, while Rupert’s was $10.3 billion.

Strong results from his diverse portfolio, which includes the luxury goods company Richemont, home of well-known brands like Cartier and Montblanc, propelled the ascent of the South African billionaire.

Dangote, meanwhile, has experienced a difficult year. Dangote has faced many challenges in spite of the much-awaited opening of his oil refinery, which was supposed to greatly increase his income.

Due to the refinery’s operating challenges, Dangote even thought of giving Nigeria’s state-owned energy corporation, NNPC, management of the multibillion dollar plant. Dangote’s business operations and revenue streams have been severely impacted by the continuing protests in Nigeria, which have caused disruptions to economic activities.

Dangote’s net worth decreased little from $13.8 billion to $13.6 billion in the days preceding August 2nd, 2024, whereas Rupert’s wealth increased from $13.4 billion to $13.6 billion.

But by August 5th, Dangote turned around and increased his net worth by $100 million, while Rupert’s fell by $300 million, moving them up the ranks.

The most wealthy people in Africa have erratic fortunes, as this most recent occurrence highlights.

The struggle for the top slot is still intense as companies negotiate difficult obstacles and shifting market conditions.

Aliko Dangote has taken the top spot on the continent once again for the time being, but as both billionaires are so similar, it could still be up for grabs.
