The FDA has banned Indian pharma producer Aveo Pharmaceuticals’ Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) accreditation following a BBC Africa Eye investigation that revealed the company’s involvement in the illicit sale of opioid-based drugs to West Africa.

Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire are accused of receiving illegal medications containing tapentadol and carisoprodol from Aveo through Westfin International.

Death and respiratory failure are among the serious health hazards associated with the highly addictive opiates.

Consequently, the FDA has directed Ghana-based importer Samos Pharma to sever all connections with Westfin International and Aveo Pharmaceuticals.

The registration of six drugs from Masters Pharmaceutical Limited, which intended to use Aveo as a contract manufacturer, has also been suspended.

The FDA reaffirmed its efforts to combat opioid abuse and highlighted its continued enforcement efforts, which include drug seizures, fines, and prosecutions.

It gave the public the assurance that law enforcement and the public will continue to work together to stop the importation of hazardous medications into Ghana.

Ghana’s zero-tolerance policy against illegal drug trafficking is strengthened by this firm action, which also bolsters public health protection initiatives.
