“This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord; He will also deliver Moab into your hands”- 2Kings 3:18

Mesha, King of Moab used to pay tributes to the King of Israel with a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel and refused to pay his tributes. So, the new King of Israel mobilized an army, courted the assistance of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and the King of Edom to go fight the King of Moab for his rebellion.

But after a journey of seven days, their armies and their animals run short of water. This got the King of Israel who had initiated the fight worried and he murmured whether the Lord called them together only to deliver them into the hands of Moab. But Jehoshaphat asked whether there was no prophet through whom they may inquire of the Lord. An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha, son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah”. So Jehoshaphat said, “the word of the Lord is with him.” So, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

When they got to Elisha, he prophesied and said “this is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord; He will also deliver Moab into your hands”.

Let’s take some quick lessons from this:

1. We must surround ourselves with the right caliber of people who will support us when our faith is failing. As human beings, circumstances may sometimes threaten our faith and if we aren’t surrounded by the right people, we will drown. When the faith of the King of Israel who had initiated the battle was failing, it was the King of Judah who led them to Elisha through whom God intervened in their situation. If we keep surrounding ourselves with faithless gossips and alarmists, they will expedite our failing faith in times of trouble. Iron must therefore be there to sharpen iron at all times,

2. When pressed, let us go to God for help, either directly or through His trusted prophets. When we do, we wouldn’t know and we wouldn’t have to figure out how God will help us, but He surely will help us. Elijah told them they won’t see wind and rain but the valley would be filled with water.

3. God knows our two main needs, the present need and the actual need, and both are easy for Him to fix. The three Kings went to Elisha because they needed water to quench their thirst. But their actual need was to overcome the Moabites. When God intervened, He gave them their immediate need of water and also victory over Moab, even though they only were looking for water.

This is the God we serve. May we trust and strive to obey Him this week and beyond, amen!
