Four members who participated in the disruptive activities at the Appointments Committee on Thursday have been suspended by Speaker of the House of Representatives Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
Chief Whips Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, and Rockson-Nelson Defeamakpor, MP for South Dayi, were among the suspended MPs. The other two are Weija Gbawe MP Jerry Ahmed Shuaib, who is also the second deputy of the Minority Caucus, and Gushegu MP Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli.
The Speaker emphasized that these suspensions were just the start and that additional sanctions might be imposed following a formal inquiry by a House committee.
There would be no salary for the two weeks of the suspension.
The Speaker expressed his profound disappointment at the conduct of the leaders and MPs involved and sincerely apologized to the people of Ghana for the national shame caused by the occurrences.
He promised to do everything in his power to restore the institution’s honor.
“I am deeply disappointed by the fundamental leaders in this shameful attitude.” he said. “Their actions have brought disrepute to Parliament and undermined the democratic values we have sworn to uphold.”
