Ghana is placing battery energy storage at the heart of its renewable energy strategy as the country works to address a significant gap between off-peak electricity demand and the evening power peak.
The electricity demand gap is estimated to reach as much as 700MW, creating challenges for Ghana’s power sector and increasing the need to maintain costly electricity generation capacity that may remain underutilised during large parts of the day.
Energy and Green Transition Minister Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor has therefore called on the Bui Power Authority to accelerate investments in battery-backed renewable energy projects.
According to the Energy Minister, large-scale battery storage can help Ghana make better use of its growing solar power capacity by storing excess electricity generated during the day and releasing it during peak evening hours.
The strategy could improve grid stability, reduce pressure on conventional power generation and support Ghana’s transition towards cleaner and more reliable energy.
Battery storage is increasingly viewed as an important solution for integrating renewable energy into Ghana’s national electricity grid, particularly as demand from households, businesses and industries continues to grow.
By investing in energy storage technology, Ghana could reduce wasted solar generation, improve electricity supply reliability and optimise existing power generation resources while advancing its green energy transition.
