A comprehensive strategy to carry out a nationwide census of both formal and informal companies has been unveiled by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

This encourages sound decision-making and fosters an environment that supports corporate expansion.

The project is anticipated to take place in two stages, with the first stage beginning in mid-October 2023 and the second stage beginning in 2024.

Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, the government statistician, spoke at a recent Ghana 2023 Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES) Stakeholders Consultative Meeting. He outlined the several advantages that this project is expected to provide for the country.

Prof. Annim stressed the significance of accurate and current data and emphasized how this census is positioned to assist businesses in escaping the constraints of informality.

“In our efforts to address the problem of informality, we have determined that this census can play a crucial role. This program goes beyond conventional categorizations and aims to approach the more general concept of informality from a variety of angles, according to Prof. Annim.

Additionally, we are “determined to use the second phase of this census to devise strategies that can mitigate such challenges in the future” since we “are keenly aware of the lessons learned during the pandemic.”

It is predicted that the extensive data collection effort would provide policymakers with crucial insights that will help them build focused plans that will accelerate corporate expansion and improve economic development.

Prof. Annim emphasized the value of collaboration from all business owners, stressing the idea that their active participation is crucial in assuring the accuracy and effectiveness of the data collected.
