The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the Advertising Association of Ghana, is set to launch a major operation to identify and remove unauthorised and non-compliant advertising billboards across Accra on November 14, 2026.

As part of preparations for the exercise, all billboard owners and advertising companies have been directed to clearly display their names or company details on their advertising structures by November 13, 2026.

Authorities have warned that billboards that remain unidentified after the deadline will be considered unclaimed or potentially unauthorised and may be marked for removal.

In a joint press statement issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Ministry and its partners explained that the operation is guided by the Ghana Standards Authority’s (GSA) billboard installation requirements, particularly GS-847:2019, Second Edition.

The standards provide guidelines for the proper mounting, installation and management of outdoor advertising structures in the country.

According to the statement, the initiative is intended to improve public safety, enforce advertising regulations and create a more organised and properly managed outdoor advertising environment in Accra.

On November 14, representatives from the Ministry, Advertising Association of Ghana, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Ghana Standards Authority and other relevant stakeholders will conduct joint inspections at selected roads and locations across Accra where billboard installations are heavily concentrated.

The inspection team, which will also be accompanied by media representatives, will identify billboards that are improperly installed, unauthorised, non-compliant or lack proper identification. Enforcement measures will begin after the inspection exercise.

The authorities further disclosed that the billboard removal operation will not be a one-time activity. Periodic inspections and enforcement exercises will be conducted across Accra, with plans to extend the initiative to other parts of Ghana in collaboration with the respective MMDAs and relevant stakeholders.

The Ministry has therefore appealed to billboard owners, advertising agencies and property owners to meet the identification deadline and cooperate with the enforcement exercise.

Members of the public and the media have also been encouraged to support the initiative, which seeks to improve road safety, strengthen regulatory compliance and promote a clean, organised and properly regulated outdoor advertising industry in Ghana.
