The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has issued a stern warning to newly enrolled lawyers against filming their first courtroom appearance or hiring professional videographers to capture their entry into court.
She cautioned that such practices violate expected courtroom standards and could result in disciplinary action against lawyers who disregard the rules.
Ghartey expressed concern over the growing trend of newly qualified lawyers recording their first steps into court, stressing that courtrooms are not appropriate places for such video recordings.
“We’ve seen some people take videos of their fresh legal steps into court. Please, it is not allowed,” she stated.
She further advised newly enrolled lawyers not to engage videographers to accompany them into courtrooms to capture their first appearance.
The GBA President acknowledged that senior members of the legal profession appreciate the excitement and enthusiasm surrounding the admission of new lawyers. However, she warned that some individuals have taken the celebrations beyond acceptable professional limits.
“As seniors, we are enjoying what is going on, but some people have crossed the line, and we don’t want to start calling for disciplinary matters,” she added.
Her comments serve as a reminder to newly qualified legal practitioners about the importance of professional ethics, courtroom etiquette and respect for established judicial procedures.
The Ghana Bar Association expects lawyers to uphold the dignity of the legal profession and protect the sanctity of court proceedings by avoiding unauthorised filming and recording within court premises.
The warning also highlights the need for newly enrolled lawyers to understand and observe the professional standards governing legal practice in Ghana.
