Sam E. Jonah is a well-known businessman and philanthropist from Ghana. On November 19, 1949, he was born in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana.
Before enrolling in the University of Ghana, Jonah completed his studies at Adisadel College in Cape Coast, Ghana, where he obtained a degree in mining engineering. Later, he graduated from Imperial College London with a master’s degree in management.

Jonah started working in 1979 as a trainee in the Ghanaian gold mine of Obuasi. He advanced fast through the ranks, becoming the mine’s first African manager in 1986. Later, he held the position of CEO for Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, one of Africa’s biggest gold mining firms.
In addition to his work in the mining sector, Jonah has held board positions with a number of businesses, including Lonmin plc, Standard Bank of South Africa, and Vodafone Ghana. Additionally, he has been active in a variety of charitable projects, particularly those that support healthcare and education.


For his philanthropic and entrepreneurial endeavors, Jonah has won various accolades and awards. President John Agyekum Kufuor bestowed upon him Ghana’s highest accolade, the Order of the Star of Ghana, in 2003.
He was ranked among the top 100 Africans with the most influence in 2006 by the New African magazine.
