The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s transport sector into an integrated, efficient and resilient transportation system capable of supporting sustainable economic growth.
Speaking at the 2026 Transport Sector Review Conference, held under the theme “Financing and Delivery of Resilient Transport Infrastructure and Services: A Big Push for Sustainable Economic Transformation,” the Minister said Ghana’s transport development must move beyond isolated projects.
He explained that the government’s vision is to establish seamless connections between railway, road, maritime, inland waterway and aviation transport to improve the movement of people and goods across the country.
Railway Development in Ghana
Highlighting developments in the railway sector, Mr Nikpe pointed to efforts to revive key railway lines in Ghana, alongside the acquisition of two locomotives and 20 wagons.
He said the government is also working to expand rail freight services, which could improve the transportation of goods while supporting trade, industry and economic activity.
Maritime and Aviation Infrastructure
The Minister also highlighted ongoing investments in maritime transport infrastructure, including the development of a new port at Akosombo.
In the aviation sector, he cited the repurposing of Terminal 2 and the acquisition of 3D scanners as part of measures to improve airport operations, passenger processing and security.
Road Transport and DVLA Digitalisation
The government’s transport sector transformation also includes improvements in road transportation and mobility services.
According to Mr Nikpe, new buses are being acquired, while Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) offices are being expanded to improve access to services.
The continued digitalisation of driver licensing and vehicle registration is also expected to make transport-related services faster, more convenient and efficient for motorists and other road users.
The Transport Minister said all these interventions form part of a broader strategy to develop a modern and resilient transport system in Ghana.
He stressed that an efficient transport network is essential for moving people and goods, improving connectivity and creating the right conditions for a stronger and more competitive Ghanaian economy.
The government therefore remains focused on investing in transport infrastructure and services that can support economic transformation, improve mobility and promote sustainable development across the country.
