President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was invited by President of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, H.E. Alassane Ouattara, to discuss bilateral cooperation.
From October 8–11, 2024, in Abidjan, President Akufo-Addo attended the first summit of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.
On October 11, 2024, the two presidents co-led the Heads of State Conference, which covered important topics such security and defense, the economy of cocoa and cashews, economic policies, and regional and global affairs.
Other areas of cooperation that were covered in the meetings were trade and industry, environment, transportation, road equipment and maintenance, mining and energy, animal resources, fisheries and aquaculture, cross-border land and maritime cooperation, and economy.
Prior to the Joint Implementation and Monitoring Committee Meeting on October 10, 2024, which was presided over by Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and Hon. Leon Kacou ADOM, Minister of Ivory Coast, co-chaired a Joint Technical Committee Meeting on October 8 and 9, 2024, which was presided over by Ambassador Jennifer Lartey, the Ministry’s Coordinating Director, Political and Economic, and her Ivorian counterpart.
The following legal documents were taken into consideration and prepared for signature at a later time:
• Memorandum of Understanding between the Ghana Revenue Authority of the Republic of Ghana, and the Directorate General of Customs of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, on Mutual Assistance in Custom Matters;
• Framework for Cooperation in Agriculture between the Government of Ghana and the Government of Cote d’Ivoire; and
• Military Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of Ghana and the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire.
Furthermore, negotiations are ongoing for finalising and signing at a later date,
• Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Ghana and the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, in the area of energy resources development.
Discussions were also held between the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and the Governor of the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) on the need to accelerate the adoption of the common currency, the Eco, for West Africa.
