Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has stated his desire to introduce a bill in Parliament for the formation of a new public university in the Bono East Region.

Located in Kintampo, the proposed university, which will be called the University of Health, Agriculture, and Life Sciences, is anticipated to make use of the region’s current educational infrastructure in order to establish a comprehensive hub for academic excellence.

Speaking at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) Governing Council inauguration in Accra, the minister stated that the university would support the larger goal of guaranteeing that every Ghanaian region has at least one significant public university.

He claims that this goal is consistent with former President John Mahama’s dedication to better access to higher education and balanced regional development.

Haruna Iddrisu also took the opportunity to restate the government’s intention to restore several universities to their original names.

He clarified that this was a policy directive intended to protect these organizations’ historical identity.

He emphasized that although the government values the efforts of the people who gave the institutions their new names, pride in the country and the institution’s history must not be undermined.

He questioned the extensive rebranding process that was implemented under President Akufo-Addo, calling it out of the ordinary by international norms and devoid of adequate public discussion.

He reassured Ghanaians that worthy individuals who have received honors will continue to receive recognition in the proper manner, including through national awards, notwithstanding the suggested reversals.
