Caller 055 232 7458(In akan): I’ve sent you money accidentally, can you send it back.
Momo Victim: I’ve not received any money. (Ends call)
Then receives a prompt to enter PIN for a GHS22 transaction, but dismisses it.
Shortly after that……..
Caller 023 474 0000: I’m calling from MTN. A fraudulent number called you requesting that you refund money they accidentally sent you.
Momo Victim: Yeah, I knew it was a scam so I dismissed it.
Caller 023 474 0000: Good. We’ve contacted the police to arrest the people involved. We will call you shortly to resolve the issue.
Caller 050 834 9935: Chaos on the line suggesting an arrest was underway or some scuffle.
Momo Victim ends call believing the scammers were being arrested.
After some 5mins
Caller 023 474 0000: I’m calling from MTN. We’ve sent a code to your number which we will need to restore your momo account.
Momo Victim: Yes. The code is XXXXXX.
Caller 023 474 0000: We would want to confirm a few things about your account. Your airtime balance is XX.
Momo Victim: Yes!
Caller 023 474 0000: Your data balance is XX
Momo Victim: Yes!
Caller 023 474 0000: Your voice balance is XX.
Momo Victim: Yes!
Caller 023 474 0000: We will need to confirm a few things about you. Your name is Stephen Appiah, right?
Momo Victim: No. I’m asimasi
Caller 023 474 0000: The PIN we have on your account is 2020. Correct?
Momo Victim: No! It’s 2…..(hesitates, realizing MTN says don’t share your PIN under any circumstance.)
Caller 023 474 0000: Have you forgotten your PIN?
Momo Victim: Oh no. It is XXXX.
Caller 023 474 0000: We’re sending you a code which I’d want you to share with me.
Momo Victim: Checks and calls out code without realizing he had shared his OTP.
Caller 023 474 0000: We would want you to confirm that the money has been refunded.
Momo Victim: Reads a message which has some money stated in it and construes it as money received. But later realizes that it actually read: Your payment of GHS XXXX to TELECEL PUSH has been completed at 2025-01-25 15:07:45………….Reference: IVY GAWORN
