In the wake of a recent attack on the Tamale District Court, the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) is requesting stronger security measures and risk allowance for its personnel.

Following a violent event on August 28, 2023, when angry locals stormed the courtroom during a case involving a man accused of distributing narcotics to the neighborhood’s kids, calls for better safety measures and restitution have been made.

An officer of the law was hurt as the enraged people threw stones at the court during the incident. An exchange of gunfire broke out between the law enforcement personnel and the enraged youngster, which caused the situation to worsen.

The President of JUSAG, Mr. Samuel Afotey Otu, emphasized the need for increased security and risk allowances for court workers during his remarks at the 2023 JUSAG Durbar and Open Forum held in Cape Coast.

He emphasized that all judicial service employees face inherent hazards in their jobs and regarded the occurrence in Tamale as a wake-up call for the service to review its security standards.

As members of the judicial branch, Mr. Afotey Otu declared: “It is our moral duty to uphold and defend the legal system. By defending the values of justice and the rule of law, we have the enormous duty of influencing the course of our country.

“Let us strengthen security in our courts as we do this and more to protect and safeguard staff, judges, magistrates, and our clients.”

The current attack at the Tamale District Court is a wake-up call for the service to review our security standards, he concluded.

“It also sends a signal that all service employees are at risk, and with this inherent risk, provision of risk allowance should not be seen as too much for staff,” the author continued.
