A court judgement has freed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to reports, the presiding court placed his bond at $65,000.
The development was verified in a statement signed by Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo and released on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, by his legal team in Ghana, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners (MPOBB).
Ken Ofori-Atta was freed from ICE custody on April 7, 2026, in accordance with a court order. The statement said, “He is at home with his family.” It further stated that Mr. Ofori-Atta is still dedicated to upholding his rights under U.S. law through due process.
“He and his family remain thankful to God and all those who have offered prayers and support during this period,” the statement continued.
Since June 2025, Ofori-Atta has been on Interpol Red Notice after Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) declared him to be a “fugitive from justice.”
Allegations pertaining to the National Cathedral project and the SML/GRA revenue assurance contract are among the 78 counts of corruption-related charges against him.
On December 18, 2024, Ghana formally sent the U.S. Department of Justice an extradition request to bring him back to Ghana.
However, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s representatives have repeatedly claimed that he has been physically unable to travel and is in the US for medical treatment, particularly for prostate cancer.
