Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has given a harsh warning to persons who indulge in LGBTQ behaviours, telling them to stop or face the full repercussions of the law once President John Dramani Mahama signs the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025.
His remarks follow the controversial law, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ bill, which was enacted by Parliament on Friday, May 29, after much discussion and examination of many proposed revisions.
One of the most contentious pieces of legislation in recent years, the measure aims to regulate matters of human sexual rights and family values. It has received tremendous support from its supporters and equally strong criticism from rights advocacy groups.
Mr. Ayariga stated on Friday on Eyewitness News that once the law is completely implemented, people who identify as LGBTQ will have to alter their behaviour.
He emphasised that the bill’s approval is a watershed and insisted that enforcement will start as soon as the president signs it.
“You will have to change. That’s the response I will give to that person,” he said. “If you’re a boy, you shouldn’t be wearing the dresses of girls around town… if you know that you’ve been practicing LGBTQ in this country, with this bill having been passed today, immediately it is assented to by the President, you will have to change.”he said.
The Majority Leader did, however, issue a warning against violence, stating that attacks on those suspected of engaging in LGBTQ activities or mob justice are prohibited by law.
The bill strongly discourages mob activity, which has grave repercussions.
He continued, “Anyone who attacks, assaults, or lynches someone who is suspected of being an LGBTQ person will be punished even more severely than LGBTQ practitioners.”
