Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police, has been directed by President John Mahama to begin an investigation right now into the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians during the general elections in 2020 and 2024.

A statement issued by Secretary to the President Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., claims that these acts have permanently damaged the country’s democratic process and that prompt and open action is required.

The government’s dedication to guaranteeing justice for the victims and their families was also emphasized in the statement.

Creating a taskforce inside the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to concentrate only on these cases is one of the suggested actions.

It is also advised to conduct in-depth interviews with victims’ relatives and witnesses in order to obtain important evidence.

In order to find any shortcomings or duties during the impacted times, the administration also demanded that electoral security procedures be reviewed.

The goal of the president’s order is to preserve Ghana’s democratic process and win back public trust.

During the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, eight people died, including three children. These are Tajudeen Mohammed, 41, Dompreh Emmanuel, 36, and Abass Ibrahim, whose age was not specified; Zakaria Samira, 12, Musah Fuseini, 14; Botwe Tackie, 16; and Abdallah Ayarek, 18.

In March of last year, Mahama pledged to launch inquiries into the murders.

His administration would look into and prosecute all of these people, he said.

Therefore, he reassured the relatives of everyone who died in the terrible events not to give up.

Mahama stated during his campaign in the Techiman North Constituency, “Insha Allah, when we come into office, we will investigate the killings, bring the perpetrators to face the law, and pay the appropriate compensations.”
