John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has charged that the administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is planning a secret campaign of false information to harm his reputation in the run-up to the general elections in 2024.
During his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Mahama visited the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. He claimed that the government’s disinformation effort is desperate as it fails to make headway.
“The seat of government knows about the recent propagation of fake news, because their campaign has failed, they have resorted to lying and propagating fake news,” Mr Mahama said.
He urged the Asantehene to ignore recent accusations that linked him to an attack on his convoy in Techiman, calling them unfounded. He characterized the charges as an effort to create division and undermine his candidacy.
In addition to calling for legitimate elections and restating his commitment to nonviolent campaigning, Mr. Mahama urged all political players to put the good of the country and unity ahead of divisive rhetoric.
He said, expressing faith in divine justice, “I know God knows everyone’s heart, and just as He enstools kings, He will have mercy on us and enstool His king.”
