The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has made fun of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his primary opponent, after an unpleasant incident at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) during the e-border system’s commissioning.

According to Mahama, the episode was a reflection of the government’s digital failures.

As part of his Ashanti Region campaign visit, he spoke to supporters in the Manso Nkwanta constituency, saying, “Yesterday, something amusing happened. There’s a machine at the airport that scans your passport for entry when you arrive. It’s a standard technology at airports worldwide. I’ve never heard of a president or vice president commissioning such a system because it’s routine.”

“But because Mr. Digital wanted everyone to know he is Mr. Digital, he cleared his schedule to launch the electronic gates,” the NDC leader added, mocking the ceremony. The gate refused to open when he put his Ghana Card in for screening. The digital gate did not open for the digital man despite his numerous attempts.

Vice-President Bawumia encountered an embarrassing pause during the Ghana Card verification process, which was delayed by the commissioning of the airport’s electronic gates.

Mr. Mahama chastised Dr. Bawumia for his digital transformation program, saying it was “overpromising and underdelivering.” He maintained that the accident represented the administration’s inability to fulfill its ambitious pledges.

Mr. Mahama said, “They can try all they want, but if the fundamentals are weak, the digital gate will expose you,” alluding to Dr. Bawumia’s own previous statements regarding economic fundamentals.
