The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has declared significant victories in the most recent round of the government’s stepped-up campaign against galamsey, or illicit mining.

This was disclosed at a news conference yesterday, Friday, October 10, 2025, at the Ministry, which was chaired by Mahmud Kabore on behalf of Sector Minister Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah (MP) and Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, Director of Communications.

In the Western and Western North Regions, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) conducted a number of coordinated field operations between October 5 and October 9, 2025, in four major galamsey hotspots: the Ankobra River, Tano Anwia Forest (Jomoro), Gangway (Aboso), and the Cape Three Points Forest Reserve, according to Ms. Mawuenyefia.

Several mining tools and supplies were seized, and 28 illegal miners were arrested as a result of the operations.

She said that multiple Changfang dredging machines, improvised shelters, and illegal processing camps were destroyed as a result of the activities in Gangway (Aboso) and the Ankobra River.

Two Chinese nationals who were suspected of funding illicit mining operations were arrested as a result of the raid in the Tano Anwia Forest (Jomoro).

Additionally, the Director of Communications revealed that the Ministry’s revitalized and coordinated reaction is based on five major pillars that support the government’s anti-galamsey campaign.

Under Hon. Buah’s direction, our strategy is built upon five pillars: Regulatory Reforms, Law Enforcement, Reclamation of Degraded Lands & Restoration of Polluted Water, Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration, and the Provision of Alternative Sustainable Livelihood.

All of our interventions nationwide are guided by these pillars,” she said.

The Blue Water Guards and NAIMOS’s combined efforts were praised by Ms. Mawuenyefia for their professionalism and tenacity. The government’s dedication to the pillar of stakeholder partnership is demonstrated by this briefing, she said, which guarantees that the public is regularly informed of any progress made in this battle, no matter how small.

The Ministry will hold numerous weekly engagements to uphold transparency and foster public trust, she continued.
