The procedures for the next November 4 presidential primary have been strengthened, according to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee.

The use of fraudulent proxy votes has been forewarned to delegates.

The committee’s head, Prof. Mike Oquaye, made this declaration following a five-hour discussion with contender representatives behind closed doors.

“While proxy voting is recognised, the committee has decided to determine the parameters under which it can be used.

“As a result, all proxy votes will be required to be verifiable by an affidavit to ensure fairness.

“The goal of these measures is to discourage the use of proxy voting as a means of buying or influencing votes,” he said.

Prof. Oquaye emphasized that voting will take place in public so that everyone could watch.

The committee will decide at that time if the program is interrupted by weather or other unavoidable events.

Sammi Awuku, a representative for Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s team, disagreed with the committee’s choice, and said that more discussion will take place on Thursday.

He expressed worry about the implementation of the affidavit system, saying that it would disenfranchise members of the foreign branch who might have trouble establishing their legal residency.

On Thursday, the committee is anticipated to amend the election regulations.

Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Representative Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Former Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh are the candidates for the NPP.
