Four individuals have been arrested and many stolen vehicles have been recovered after the Ghana Police Service dismantled a suspected carjacking network that operated around Kumasi and parts of Tarkwa.

The discovery comes after Mr. Andrews Amankwaa was shot and killed on February 10, 2026, during a heist at Ohwim Amanfrom. During the assault, his Toyota Hilux, registered under the license plate GN 6647-25, was stolen. Later, while undergoing treatment, he passed away in the hospital.

Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police, announced the arrest of four people connected to the group, known locally as the Duku gang, during a press conference held at the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters on Monday, February 23, 2026.

He revealed that Eric Antwi Duku, one of the suspects, was shot during the police operation and later passed away. Targeting Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser cars, the group allegedly used violence when victims objected, according to the IGP.

According to investigations, the network also had contacts in Dubai, where individuals allegedly helped prepare fake vehicle documents, and operational ties that extended to Tarkwa and Offinso.

When Akwesi Manu was discovered in possession of the murdered victim’s cell phone on February 18, 2026, the first arrest was made, according to the police. On February 19, Bashiru Tanko was later taken into custody in Atonsu in Kumasi.

Emmanuel Kwame Appiah was arrested in Danyame on February 22 and Kwadwo Amponsah near Buokrom on February 21 as a result of follow-up operations. Appiah was the getaway driver in the Ohwim Amanfrom robbery, according to Yohuno.

A Bruni Mod 84 handgun, live ammunition, a vehicle tracking device, and multiple stolen cars were among the items found on the suspects. According to the authorities, forensic and ballistic analysis is being done on the exhibits.

According to preliminary information, the group regularly targeted cars that were black or ash in colour and surveilled possible victims.

According to reports, the stolen cars were flown overseas in certain cases and moved via the northern border area.

The syndicate has been connected by the police to a number of robberies that have occurred in Tarkwa, Kumasi, and other Ashanti Region locations, some of which have been fatal.

Mr. Yohuno praised the Ashanti Regional Commander, the Cyber Vetting Team, the Anti-Robbery Unit, the Regional Intelligence Team, and the general public for contributing intelligence that made the operation possible.

He also expressed gratitude for the logistical assistance provided throughout the inquiry.

He declared, “Criminal elements who threaten public safety will be pursued relentlessly, We will leave no stone unturned to bring them to justice. We call on residents to continue reporting suspicious activity and credible information to the police.”

While investigations continue to find and capture additional people linked to the group’s operations, the suspects are still in police custody and are anticipated to be arraigned in court.
