The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially expressed its support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, thanks to a wide coalition of party intellectuals, TESCON leaders, and professional organisations.
The support was revealed following a meeting held in what the group described as a spirit of patriotic responsibility and devotion to national progress.
The group includes the Patriotic Intellectuals of Ghana (PI-G), the National Association of TESCON Patrons for Bawumia (NATEP4DMB), TESCON members, and related professional bodies, ahead of the NPP’s internal primaries slated for 31 January 2026.
In a joint statement, the group said its decision followed a comprehensive examination of all aspirants contending for the party’s top position, finding that Dr. Bawumia is the most capable, credible, and electable candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections and govern Ghana thereafter.
They pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s two stints as vice president as unmistakable proof of his skill, moral character, and suitability for a more senior role. The group claims that his vast background in public administration and economic management puts him in a position to lead the nation towards sustainable progress.
The coalition highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s experience as a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, describing him as a seasoned technocrat with extensive knowledge of macroeconomic stability, financial inclusion, and monetary policy.
They asserted that times when his influence was limited further demonstrated his importance to national economic management, and they acknowledged that he had made a substantial contribution to times of economic resilience.
Citing notable projects including mobile money interoperability, the Ghana Card, the digital address system, paperless ports, and the Ghana.gov platform, the group also commended Dr. Bawumia’s leadership in Ghana’s digital transformation.
They asserted that these changes had made Ghana a leader on the continent in effective public service delivery and digital governance.
Beyond policy accomplishments, the coalition emphasised Dr. Bawumia’s character traits, characterising him as personable, humble, and composed under duress.
They praised his constant emphasis on concepts and solutions rather than insults, pointing out that these qualities are essential for contemporary leadership.
Dr. Bawumia was also characterised in the statement as a unifying figure in Ghanaian society and the NPP.
As a Northern Muslim in a varied political scene, they stated he epitomises inclusion and national cohesion, with the ability to overcome regional, ethnic, and religious barriers.
They cited former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s public commendation of Dr. Bawumia’s devotion, integrity, and commitment during 16 years of intimate cooperation.
The group cited projects like financial inclusion programs, drone medical delivery services (Zipline), Agenda 111 hospital projects, and the digitisation of state institutions as proof of his servant-leadership style and dedication to inclusive development in addition to economic and digital reforms.
The coalition also commended Dr. Bawumia’s tenacity and ongoing commitment to public service after the 2024 elections, pointing out that he has an impeccable public record free from accusations of corruption or factional control.
Finally, as the NPP gets ready for its internal primaries and the 2028 general elections, the Patriotic Intellectuals of Ghana, NATEP4DMB, TESCON members, and affiliated professional groups unconditionally endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and urged delegates and party loyalists to support his candidature.
