Anthony Sarpong, the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), said that barely months after its implementation, the Authority’s recently implemented Publican AI system is already producing notable increases in domestic revenue mobilisation.
Speaking on Thursday, May 28, at the 10th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra, Mr Sarpong called the artificial intelligence-driven system’s early performance “amazing and promising,” noting that the technology contributed to an extra GH1 billion in customs income in April alone.
He states that the program is a component of the GRA’s larger initiatives to employ technology to increase productivity, lessen human intervention in tax assessments, and guarantee equity in revenue collecting procedures.
“We want to claim that GRA is the first public institution to use AI across the board, affecting many businesses. The purpose is to reduce human discretion, make faster assessment, create a fairer basis for all import and import assessment,” he said.
According to Mr. Sarpong, the AI-powered technology is assisting the Authority in bolstering its customs operations while addressing income leakages that have long plagued tax administration.
“Indeed the results for the first two months of deploying the AI is amazing and promising. In the month of April alone we added GHS1 billion to our revenue generation for customs,” he revealed.
He added that the Authority is expected to perform well once more in May, with first data already indicating a significant rise in income.
“We are on course in the month of May and the results as of yesterday is showing that we are going beyond GHS1 billion for the month of May,” he added.
