Road tolls will no longer be collected by people when the tax is reinstituted in 2023, according to Kwesi Amoako-Atta, the Minister for Roads and Highways.

Road toll payments will be made electronically, according to Mr. Amoako-Atta.

“We’re planning to construct a new expressway with tolling capabilities, but those tolling capabilities will be electronic tolling capabilities…

The process will be completed online if it is necessary, he said.

In order for the government to build sufficiently good roads, he asked road users to be ready to pay more for the toll.

“Throughout the entire year, we received an average of GH78 million, but depending on the state of the ground, that kind of money cannot even be used to construct 10 kilometers of road. The toll we were paying was the lowest in the entire planet. We want fantastic and good highways in our nation, meanwhile.

“If we want wonderful things, we have to be willing to pay more. We won’t be paying the 50 pesewas and one anymore.

The government stated in November 2021 that it would stop collecting tolls on all major national roadways.

One year later, the administration has reversed course to resume toll collecting.

The return of the road toll is one of the income strategies in the 2023 budget that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta proposed to Parliament.

The 2023 Budget statement’s paragraph 462 states that “the fiscal policy measures to support the 2023 Budget for consideration and approval by Parliament include the reintroduction of tolls on selected public roads and highways with a renewed focus on leveraging technology in the collection to address the inefficiencies characterized by the prior toll collection regime.”

The Minority in Parliament has declared that they will only provide their complete support if the money collected from the toll is used only for road upkeep.
