Telecel Ghana has introduced a new biodegradable Eco-SIM designed to reduce plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability in Ghana’s telecommunications industry.
The new Telecel Eco-SIM uses 90 per cent less plastic than conventional SIM cards while providing customers with the same voice, mobile data and digital connectivity services. The initiative forms part of the company’s broader commitment to adopting more environmentally friendly technology.
The launch comes amid growing concerns about the environmental impact of physical SIM cards. Data from the Trusted Connectivity Alliance indicates that approximately 3.7 billion physical SIM cards were produced globally in 2024, highlighting the need for more sustainable alternatives within the telecommunications sector.
In Ghana, the potential environmental impact is significant. Data from the National Communications Authority (NCA) estimates that the country had more than 43 million active mobile SIM users as of February 2026. Telecel Ghana believes the adoption of sustainable SIM technology could help reduce plastic consumption and waste on a larger scale.
According to Aneth Muga, Director of Consumer Business at Telecel Ghana, the Eco-SIM was developed to make environmental responsibility part of everyday connectivity.
She explained that customers who choose the Eco-SIM can contribute to reducing plastic waste while continuing to enjoy reliable telecommunications services.
Eco-SIM Supports Green Technology
Although SIM cards are relatively small, the cards and their packaging add to the growing volume of single-use plastic waste that ends up in landfills and waterways.
By introducing a biodegradable SIM card, Telecel Ghana is giving customers an environmentally friendly alternative without requiring them to change how they access mobile voice, data and digital services.
Telecel Ghana’s Director of External Affairs, Komla Buami, said the initiative demonstrates that technological development and environmental sustainability can work together.
The Eco-SIM launch forms part of Telecel Ghana’s wider sustainability and climate action programme, which includes investments in renewable energy and environmental conservation.
Telecel Ghana Expands Renewable Energy Initiatives
As part of its green technology strategy, Telecel Ghana is transitioning network exchanges into solar-powered connectivity hubs. So far, 16 network exchanges have been powered by renewable energy, helping reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
The telecommunications company has also planted more than 40,000 trees across forest reserves, including Achimota, Chipa and South Formangso, as part of efforts to support reforestation and ecosystem restoration.
The introduction of the Telecel Eco-SIM therefore adds another component to the company’s environmental sustainability efforts, combining digital connectivity with measures aimed at reducing plastic pollution and supporting a greener future for Ghana.
