The European Union Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Rune Skinnebach, met with Hon. Emelia Arthur, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, to discuss Ghana’s progress in removing the EU’s Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing yellow card.
Ghana’s recently passed Fisheries Act was praised by Ambassador Skinnebach, who called it a major step toward ensuring sustainability in the nation’s fishing industry. He restated the EU’s and Ghana’s joint resolve to improve fisheries governance and get the yellow card lifted.

In her remarks, Hon. Emelia Arthur praised the EU’s ongoing cooperation and emphasized that although the new law is a significant accomplishment, its effectiveness hinges on how well it is implemented.
Noting that the amended Act protects their interests by guaranteeing that fishing licenses are registered in their names, she emphasized the significance of involving and teaching artisanal fishermen to ensure compliance with the modified requirements.
In order to improve oversight and enforcement activities, the Minister also suggested using surveillance footage in the Gulf of Guinea.
