Hon. Emelia Arthur, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, met with Chief Fishermen from the Greater Accra Region to discuss the urgent problem of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The gathering, which took place in the Ministry’s conference room, gathered together traditional fishing leaders from Chorkor, Bortianor, and Ngleshie to discuss ways to stop the destructive activities endangering Ghana’s marine resources.

The Hon. Minister fervently urged the chiefs to assume powerful leadership positions in their communities in order to end illicit fishing practices throughout her speech.

In order to help Ghana fulfill international fishing standards and work toward removing the EU’s yellow card sanction, she underlined the importance of teamwork.

“The responsibility lies on all of us, especially you as leaders of your fishing communities, to protect our marine resources. Let’s work together to restore the integrity of our sector,” she urged.

The Ministry’s continuous attempts to include stakeholders in reestablishing sustainability and discipline in Ghana’s fishing industry include this involvement.
