Despite the difficulties, President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the government’s commitment to fighting drug misuse in the nation.
He recommitted to employing all possible tools to combat the threat, acknowledging the extreme vulnerability of the majority of drug misuse victims, especially the nation’s children.
This was announced by the President during the culmination of the Dumba festival 2025 in Wa, in a speech read by Upper West Regional Minister Mr. Charles Lwanga Puozuing on his behalf.
He called drug abuse a “destructive narcotics menace” that jeopardizes Ghana’s growth going forward and poses a threat to communities.
President Mahama urged chiefs, elders, and opinion leaders to work with the government to battle drug misuse, emphasizing that it required a team effort.
“The fight against drug abuse cannot be left to the government alone. Traditional Authorities, who remain custodians of our culture and conscience, have a pivotal role to play,” the President stressed.
He said, “Drug abuse is an enemy to progress. It destroys families, robs our youth of their potential, fuels crime, and undermines the moral fibre of society.”
He called on traditional authority to take on the role of sentinels of sobriety and step up community sensitization, bylaw enforcement, mentorship, and education about the risks of drug abuse.
Through the 24-Hour Economy initiative, industrial parks, and entrepreneurial support, the President underlined his commitment to bolstering law enforcement, increasing access to rehabilitation services, and fostering youth development.
In order to advance the battle against drug misuse, President Mahama also pledged his commitment to strengthening civic engagement through regional task forces like the Upper West Regional Anti-Drug misuse Taskforce.
He emphasized that culture was a living resource that needed to be preserved and passed down, and that accountability, discipline, and respect for authority were all necessary.
“The fight against drug abuse demands nothing less than our collective resolve. With traditional authorities guiding our people, with government providing leadership and opportunity, and with citizens uniting in purpose, I am confident that we can turn the tide. Together, let us protect our youth, safeguard our culture, and build a Ghana of dignity, sobriety, and prosperity,” the President said.
