According to Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, 107 foreigners have been deported since he assumed office as part of the government’s continuous campaign against illegal mining, or “galamsey.”

Minister Muntaka told reporters that the government is committed to stopping illicit mining, which has had a negative economic and environmental impact on the nation.

He revealed that he has instructed the Inspector-General of Police to promptly transfer all regional, divisional, and district police commanders who are based in mining districts in addition to deportations.

The Minister claims that the purpose of this instruction is to replace long-serving officials who have failed to adequately address the galamsey threat.

“The decision to transfer these commanders stems from their prolonged stay in mining areas, where illegal mining continues to thrive. We need new faces and fresh perspectives to address this challenge,” Minister Muntaka stated.

He added that stricter measures would be implemented to protect Ghana’s natural resources and emphasized that the government is still committed to combating illicit mining.

Ghana has long struggled with illegal mining, which has drawn worldwide criticism for its destructive effects on the environment and water bodies.
