Bright Mensah Bonsu, the guy at the heart of the contentious $1.5 million cash deal involving Ghana’s diplomatic property in Lagos, Nigeria, has been arrested, according to Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Mensah Bonsu, who identified himself as a special aide to the late High Commissioner Alhaji Rashid Bawa, has finally been captured by Ghanaian security personnel, Ablakwa said in a Facebook post.

Ablakwa claims that the $1.5 million was paid in cash and was never placed into a government account. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no documentation indicating that the sum was ever disclosed.

According to documents, the oceanfront property was worth $5.3 million, and the money paid was considered an upfront payment. “The outcome of the 2024 elections must have thwarted their plans,” Ablakwa said.

Additionally, he revealed that Mensah Bonsu, who was not employed by Foreign Affairs or the Ghana High Commission in Nigeria, received a diplomatic passport in October 2023.

“We are also investigating the basis on which he was granted the diplomatic passport by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government,” he added.

Mensah Bonsu is reported to have stated that he acted on orders from “superiors” who reportedly provided him with confidential information.

According to Ablakwa, justice will be done, and criminal charges are on the horizon.

“This should send clear assurance to Nigerian authorities and the intended buyer that we’re committed to justice and will recover the stolen $1.5 million,” Ablakwa stated.

Ghana’s diplomatic property is not for sale, he reiterated, adding that “severe consequences await anyone who tests our resolve.”

“For God and Country,” he concluded.
