The Gbese Mantse Homowo Peace Cup was presented to Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey in advance of the Homowo festival festivities this year.

The Gbese Mantse, His Royal Majesty Nii Ayi-Bonte II, is sponsoring the sporting event as part of initiatives to use sports to promote harmony, peace, and the rich Ga culture.

Mayor Allotey, who accepted the trophy on Wednesday at Accra City Hall, said he was thrilled and thanked the organizers for bringing the tournament to the city’s attention. He also said the event was a powerful symbol of unity and peace, which is essential for the city’s progress.

“We all need peace, because without peace, we cannot run Accra. Without peace, nobody can go and run a business,” he said.

The Mayor also congratulated the traditional authority for providing a positive example for the young people and praised the Gbese Mantse for his insight and visionary leadership in using football as a vehicle for peace and cultural promotion, emphasizing that the Ga land belongs to the Ga people.

He pledged to support the competition and expressed optimism that Accra Hearts of Oak, his favorite team, would win.

“I will do everything I can to support this programme so that Hearts can win this Cup,” he said.

The mayor, who referred to the presentation as his third since taking office, emphasized his administration’s dedication to fostering peace via inclusive events and cultural engagement and voiced hope about keeping the Cup in Accra.

One of the main organizers of the Homowo Peace Cup, Samuel Anim Addo, urged Accra citizens to completely embrace the festivities and keep up their support for the Mayor’s grounded leadership.

He emphasized that the competition, which is being held in collaboration with the National Youth Authority (NYA) and other government agencies, provides a forum for youngsters to come together and creates job chances.

Mr. Anim also took the opportunity to praise the Ga Mantse for starting the program, which would feature competition for the coveted Cup between well-known local teams like Hearts of Oak and Hearts of Lions.
