A middle-aged physically disabled trader in a wheelchair has received financial assistance from Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who has also purchased all of his items as part of the Assembly’s efforts to promote equitable development.
On Friday, October 3, during a public awareness tour on sanitation in the Central Business District (CBD), Mayor Allotey backed the Person With Disability (PWD).
In his remarks following the gesture, the mayor claimed that the trader’s will to make a decent life in spite of physical restrictions was an example of the resilience Accra needs in order to fulfil the goals of “Resetting Accra.”
He claimed that the assistance was meant to encourage PWDs to lead respectable lives and to show the Assembly’s dedication to tearing down social and financial obstacles that disadvantaged locals face.
He emphasised that increased sanitation immediately benefited street vendors, traders, market patrons, commuters, including those with disabilities, and that inclusive growth was a cornerstone of the city’s policy that covers access to respectable employment, safer public areas, and cleaner communities.

By announcing plans to collaborate with the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development to connect PWD entrepreneurs with business advisory services, sign up interested traders for microgrant and skills-upgrading programs, and give priority to accessible trading points in the centre, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering PWDs.
In light of the trader’s tenacity, he advised other PWDs to stop pleading for weapons.
Visibly moved by the gesture, the merchant, Osei Kwaku, thanked the mayor and claimed that since he began trading, no one had bought all of his products or showed him such kindness.
He clarified that in order to make a respectable living, he decided to give up begging on the streets of Accra and start trading. He added that the assistance would enable him to grow his company and gain greater independence.
