The individuals in charge of overseeing the AirtelTigo transaction have been denounced by Mr. Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, who has called them “enemies of the state.”

The sale of AirtelTigo, which was purportedly saddled with an incredible GH¢3.5 billion debt, for just one dollar is the source of Mr. George’s criticism.

The Minister questioned the patriotism of individuals in charge of the process when addressing reporters in Parliament on Monday.

He declared: “Those who managed the AirtelTigo process are enemies of our state and individuals who have no sense of patriotism.”

Concerns regarding AirtelTigo’s financial obligations were brought up in conversations with the US Embassy, the Minister disclosed.

“The American Embassy, along with their team, was in my office, and one of the major issues raised was the indebtedness to ATC. The debt sitting on the books of AirtelTigo exceeds 3.5 billion Ghana Cedis,” he told the media.

“So if someone told you that they bought it for 1 dollar, who is going to pay the 1.3 billion that is sitting there and accumulating interest?”  Mr. George asked, underscoring the seriousness of the problem.

He pointed out that the sale of AirtelTigo had drawn criticism, with many people wondering why a business with so much debt would be sold for such a small sum.
