In an attempt to defend the Volta River Authority’s (VRA) controlled release of surplus water from the Akosombo Dam, the Ministry of Energy has stated that doing so was an essential precautionary measure to save the dam from collapsing.

Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh told Parliament in a briefing that the unusually high water levels in the dam’s reservoir required the VRA to act right away.

He emphasized that there may have been disastrous outcomes for the populace if the water entering the reservoir had crested the Akosombo Dam on September 15 and the VRA had not proactively started the leak.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized the need for the spill to prevent an unthinkable catastrophe while acknowledging the difficulties caused by the flooding and the hundreds of inhabitants who have been forced to leave their homes in the Volta and Greater Accra Regions.

He emphasized that it was a necessary action to safeguard the dam and the towns downstream, despite the inconveniences.

The Minister gave assurances to the impacted areas and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to help lessen the effects of the Akosombo Dam’s regulated water release.
