The Deputy Minister for the Interior, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terkabi, made a forceful statement at the inauguration of the Sabon Zongo Neighbourhood Watch Committee of Zongo Against Drugs and for Development in Accra.

He called on all stakeholders to unite in the fight against drugs and warned that drug users would face the full force of the law.

He warned that anyone found guilty will face prosecution and reaffirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to combating the problem of drug misuse in Ghanaian communities.

Given the terrible toll that drug usage takes on people, families, and communities, Hon. Ebenezer Terlabi underlined the necessity of a multipronged strategy to combat this complicated problem.

He stated that 60% of drug users in Ghana are between the ages of 15 and 35, and that the Narcotics Control Commission reports that cannabis, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine are the most frequently abused drugs in the country.

The Hon. Deputy Minister stated that the government is dedicated to bolstering law enforcement, putting public education campaigns into action, and offering assistance for the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals impacted by drug abuse through the Ministry of the Interior and the Narcotics Control Commission.

The establishment of the Sabon Zongo Neighbourhood Watch Committee, he said, is a big step in giving local communities the ability to take charge of the battle against drug abuse.

The Deputy Minister urged the committee members to work hard in the service of their community while maintaining the values of honesty, responsibility, and service. He also praised the Chiefs, Imams, and opinion leaders for their support of the committee.

The Deputy Minister’s call to action is a rallying cry for all Ghanaians to join the fight against drug usage as the government and communities unite to combat this scourge.

‘Together, we can create a society that is free from the bane of drugs and where our youth can thrive and reach their full potential’, he stated.
