A major tragedy has been reported at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atiwa East District of Ghana’s Eastern Region, where an abandoned illegal mining pit reportedly collapsed on 11 people.
Seven people are feared dead following the devastating galamsey pit collapse, while rescue teams continue efforts to locate and save those trapped underground.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, National Ambulance Service and NADMO, alongside courageous community members, are currently at the scene working to rescue victims and manage the emergency situation.
The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers associated with illegal mining (galamsey), abandoned mining pits and unsafe mining sites across Ghana.
