Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has emphasised the importance of natural gas in strengthening energy security, improving electricity generation and promoting industrial development across Africa.

Dr. Jinapor made the remarks while participating in a ministerial panel at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) and African Energy Chamber (AEC) Strategic Forum during African Energy Week 2026. The discussions focused on balancing Africa’s domestic natural gas utilisation with its ambitions to expand gas exports to international markets.

Ghana Prioritises Natural Gas for Reliable Electricity Generation

Speaking at the forum, the Energy Minister highlighted the need to connect upstream natural gas exploration and production to power generation, industrial competitiveness and regional energy integration.

He explained that natural gas remains a critical component of Ghana’s electricity generation system and national energy security strategy. Increased gas availability to thermal power plants has helped reduce the country’s dependence on liquid fuels for electricity production.

The minister’s remarks underscore the importance of developing Ghana’s domestic gas resources to support reliable electricity supply, improve energy efficiency and strengthen the competitiveness of local industries.

Africa Urged to Strengthen Energy Security and Resilience

Dr. Jinapor also stressed the need for African countries to build stronger energy systems capable of withstanding global energy disruptions and fluctuations in international fuel markets.

According to the minister, developing domestic energy resources and expanding regional natural gas cooperation will be essential to reducing exposure to external shocks and improving Africa’s collective energy security.

He noted that investments in gas production, transportation and distribution infrastructure could help African countries meet growing domestic energy demand while creating opportunities for economic growth and industrialisation.

West African Gas Pipeline Key to Regional Energy Integration

The Energy Minister identified regional energy infrastructure, including the West African Gas Pipeline, as an important platform for expanding cross-border natural gas trade and strengthening cooperation among African countries.

Improved regional gas connectivity could enhance energy market integration, support electricity generation and create economic benefits for both gas-producing and gas-consuming nations.

Strengthening these partnerships is also expected to help countries optimise their natural gas resources, improve energy supply reliability and attract investment into Africa’s energy sector.

Ghana Pursues Balanced Energy Transition Strategy

Dr. Jinapor reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to pursuing a practical and balanced energy transition that combines natural gas development with increased investment in renewable energy and other sustainable energy solutions.

Under this approach, natural gas will continue to support dependable electricity generation as Ghana works to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy technologies and advance its green transition agenda.

The strategy seeks to balance energy affordability, reliability, industrial growth and environmental sustainability while supporting Ghana’s long-term development objectives.

His participation in African Energy Week 2026 highlights Ghana’s continued engagement in discussions on natural gas investment, regional energy cooperation and sustainable energy development across the African continent.
