Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has officially opened the 14th Ghana Garden and Flower Show at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra.
The annual event is being held under the theme “Green Means Business, Beauty and More,” highlighting the growing economic opportunities within Ghana’s horticulture, landscaping and environmental sustainability sectors.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Vice President emphasised that gardens and flowers represent more than beauty, noting that the horticulture industry supports a wide range of growers, skilled workers, entrepreneurs and businesses.
She said strengthening the sector requires better access to finance, technical skills, quality standards, markets and export opportunities. She also called for greater use of existing government programmes to support businesses operating across Ghana’s horticultural value chain.
According to the Vice President, the recent flooding experienced in parts of the country has further demonstrated the importance of integrating green spaces and environmental protection into urban development.
She stressed the need for cities and towns to incorporate green areas into development planning while improving sanitation, promoting responsible construction and encouraging greater environmental responsibility.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that initiatives being implemented through the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat, relevant government ministries, the Department of Parks and Gardens and local authorities are designed to make environmental greening a more deliberate component of national development.
She explained that these initiatives can also create opportunities for business growth, job creation and sustainable livelihoods within Ghana’s horticulture and green economy sectors.
The Vice President congratulated Stratcomm Africa, exhibitors, partners and other stakeholders whose contributions have helped sustain the Ghana Garden and Flower Show over the years.
The Ghana Garden and Flower Show continues to provide a platform for promoting horticulture, landscaping, environmental conservation, entrepreneurship and the economic potential of Ghana’s green economy.
