Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence Committee, has raised fresh concerns over a series of major drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana, accusing the government of failing to take decisive action against suspected narcotics networks.
According to the legislator, the repeated seizures of cocaine and methamphetamine allegedly connected to Ghana could damage the country’s reputation internationally. He warned that Ghana risks becoming a major transit point for cocaine and other illegal drugs if authorities fail to strengthen investigations and enforcement.
In a social media statement, Fordjour said he first raised concerns in April 2025 over a reported $500 million cocaine case and suspicious flights. He alleged that instead of launching investigations into the matter, the government responded by intimidating him.
“I raised alarm on the $500m cocaine and suspicious flights in April 2025. Instead of the government investigating the matter and prosecuting the culprits, the govt chose to storm my house with armed thugs under the supervision of BNI,” he stated.
Fordjour also referred to an April 2026 methamphetamine seizure in Australia, involving drugs reportedly valued at approximately $208 million and linked to Ghana.
He further claimed that Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed informed Parliament that some government officials were allegedly complicit in the narcotics trade. However, Fordjour questioned why no officials had subsequently been publicly identified, dismissed or prosecuted.
“The Interior Minister indicated to Parliament that government officials were complicit yet, no government official has since [been] named nor prosecuted,” he said.
The former Deputy Defence Minister also cited the latest $260 million cocaine seizure in France, which he said adds to a growing series of international drug busts involving Ghana.
Fordjour claimed that within less than two years of the NDC administration led by President John Dramani Mahama, more than $1 billion worth of drugs had allegedly been intercepted in connection with Ghana or its ports.
“In less than 2 years under the NDC Mahama government, over $1billion unprecedented worth of drugs have been busted in and out of our ports and yet no government official has been fired for their failure,” he stated.
The ranking member questioned whether the government’s response to the alleged drug trafficking cases in Ghana was simply a matter of institutional failure or whether there could be individuals benefiting from the illegal trade.
“Is the government directly facilitating these narcotics transits or benefiting from the trade, for which they have failed to take steps to disincentivize drug trafficking?” he asked.
The allegations are likely to intensify calls for stronger drug trafficking investigations, border security measures and accountability at Ghana’s ports as international authorities continue to intercept large consignments of narcotics allegedly connected to Ghana.
Authorities have yet to publicly establish the allegations made by Fordjour against specific government officials, and any claims of criminal involvement would require evidence and due legal process.
