The 2026 African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (AFROPAC) Conference has officially opened in Accra, bringing together parliamentary leaders, public finance officials and accountability institutions from across Africa to strengthen financial oversight and promote transparency in the management of public resources.

The conference, organised by AFROPAC in collaboration with the Parliament of Ghana, is being held under the theme “Oversight for Resilience: Strengthening Africa’s Public Accounts Committees (PACs) Amid a Shifting Financial Landscape.”

In their opening remarks, AFROPAC Chairperson Patrick Nsamba Osache and Deputy Chairperson Abena Osei-Asare highlighted the critical role of Public Accounts Committees in promoting good governance, strengthening public financial management and ensuring that governments remain accountable to citizens.

Delivering the keynote address, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin commended Ghana’s Public Accounts Committee for its oversight responsibilities and called for stronger cooperation among parliamentary accountability committees across Africa.

Mr Bagbin also stressed the need for governments to provide adequate financial and institutional resources to enable PACs to investigate public expenditure, scrutinise government accounts and address financial irregularities.

He further encouraged stronger collaboration between Parliament and the media to improve public awareness of audit findings and ensure that recommendations from parliamentary investigations translate into meaningful action.

The Speaker subsequently declared the 2026 AFROPAC Conference officially open.

Other prominent personalities who addressed the gathering included Wa East MP Godfred Jasaw Seidu, Majority Leader James Agalga, Auditor-General Dr Pamela Graham, Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The conference is expected to strengthen parliamentary oversight, improve public sector accountability and promote responsible management of taxpayers’ money across African countries.

It also provides an important platform for African legislators and financial oversight institutions to exchange ideas and develop strategies for tackling corruption, public expenditure irregularities and financial mismanagement.
