In the Assin South District of the Central Region, a Junior High School student, age 18, from Assin Andoe D/A Basic School perished in River Ochi while attempting to swim.
According to reports, Stephen Nimako-Appau, the deceased, went to the river on Wednesday with his buddies to demonstrate his swimming prowess in exchange for a prize of GHC10.
But as soon as he dove into the river, he went under.
A search party comprised of local divers and Fire Service personnel then started looking for him after his pals hurried home to tell the town’s elders about the tragic incident.
The student’s body has not yet been found despite over 30 hours of searching and the slaughter of sheep and chickens to appease the gods. The hunt is still going on.
The Assin Andoe electoral area assemblyman, Hon. William Appiah, warned the locals to use caution when entering the river to swim or fetch water because of the recent heavy rains.
