Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, has voiced concerns about the political risks associated with selecting Vice President Dr. Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Only 3% of vice presidents who served for eight straight years and then attempted to continue their political careers by running for the President, according to historical statistics, have been successful.
Although Dr. Bawumia has performed admirably in his capacity as vice president, he was criticized for the NPP’s risky decision to nominate Dr. Bawumia as its presidential candidate due to the global economic crisis and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Therefore, nobody poses a threat to me; as for Mahama, he is not even involved because I will easily defeat him; Mahama has failed the North, so I will easily defeat him.
“I will easily defeat the vice president when you bring him here. He has achieved success, yet after eight years in office…It is difficult for any vice president who has run for office eight times in a row and wants to run for president directly; only 3% of candidates worldwide have been successful in doing so.
“So why would NPP want to run such a high risk? I came in because I made the decision to do so. Although Dr. Bawumia is a wonderful man, every administration is now unpopular due to the global recession and the Russia-Ukraine war. Why would you want to take a chance like that? We are all starting to work; it is not about English,” he remarked.
Kennedy Agyapong denied feeling threatened by other contenders. He believed that he would defeat every opponent he would face in the general elections.
Ten potential flagbearer candidates have since picked up their candidacy papers to run in the election. They consist of;
Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr. Owusu Afriyie, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan Kyerematen, Kennedy Agyapong, Joe Ghartey, and Kwadwo Poku were also among the first to pick up nomination forms for the party’s primary elections.
