President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the enormous cost of sending Ghanaian supporters from Ghana to FIFA World Cup stadiums in 2026 renders the government’s sponsorship of large-scale travel impractical.
He stated that the anticipated cost per supporter is roughly $11,000, which is well beyond what the state can afford to pay for large-scale travel plans.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to fiscal restraint while speaking at a diaspora town hall meeting on Sunday, May 31. He emphasised that the government cannot commit public funds to cover the entire cost of travel, lodging, food, and match tickets for huge numbers of fans.
“We cannot, you know, spend our money in that manner. The cost approximates for each person to be fed, accommodated, transported, and all that to watch the games, tickets, and all that is estimated at almost $11,000,” he said.
In response, he revealed that if Ghanaians living abroad want to attend games in the host cities, the government will instead buy match tickets.
