A suspected motorbike theft syndicate operating in the area has been successfully dismantled by the Upper West Regional Police Command, which has recovered 17 stolen motorcycles and made several arrests.
A legal complaint filed on July 11, 2026, by a victim whose black Luojia motorbike, registration number M-21-UW 3512, was taken from the Ghana National Fire Service’s Jirapa headquarters, set off the groundbreaking operation.
Authorities responded quickly when the victim informed friends and police about the missing car.
Officers in Loho detained Nasiru Muftawu while he was in possession of the stolen motorbike based on reliable information.
Muftawu was arrested to help with additional investigations after confessing to the crime during questioning.
Three more suspects were apprehended following intelligence-driven operations: 19-year-old Basit Muftawu, also known as Posey; 22-year-old Issahaku Maruf, also known as Katel; and 18-year-old Mohammed Ali, also known as Geewaa.
Three more people were found to have additional evidence related to the thefts: Rashid Kankan (20), Mutala Rashad (20), and Haruna Hamdan, also known as DJ (20).
Sixteen further stolen motorcycles were recovered from UBIDS, Chakor, and Glamon, all within the Wa Municipality, as a consequence of the ongoing investigations.
The suspects have been placed under police custody after being arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court. Their next court appearance is set for Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
In a statement, the Upper West Regional Police Command urged anyone who had lost motorbikes to come to the Wa District Police Headquarters with their legitimate ownership certificates so they could be identified and retrieved.
“The Upper West Regional Police Command wishes to assure the public of its unwavering commitment to combating crime and dismantling criminal networks,” the statement read.
“We also encourage the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing policing efforts in the region.”
